Immerse is a publication based on Medium designed to spark creative dialogue around emerging forms of nonfiction media, produced in partnership with the MIT Open Documentary Lab. Over the past few years we’ve published articles exploring topics ranging from the ethics of VR, to the role of AI in storytelling, to the ways in which speculative fiction can help point towards more positive futures. We provide a critical lens on emerging nonfiction storytelling and serve as a bridge for practitioners to academic research on emergent media.

Now, we need help to grow our audience and create new partnerships. We seek to address structural inequity within our own practices, actively seeking out contributions from and partnerships with a racially diverse range of producers and thinkers from the field, especially those storytellers who media and festivals continue to treat as peripheral.

We’re seeking an Engagement Editor who is already deeply interested in the many potentialities and challenges of emerging nonfiction media. The Engagement Editor will develop and implement an outreach plan to spread the word around our calls for entries, collaborate with the other editors in identifying and securing new editorial and audience partners, and raise our profile on social media and within related networks.

Immerse is committed to fostering a working environment where diverse perspectives are encouraged and represented. People of color, women, gender non-conforming individuals, people with disabilities, and individuals who otherwise identify as marginalized are strongly encouraged to apply for this position.

This remote position offers a flexible, 8-hour workweek and a stipend of $10,000 but does not offer health insurance or other benefits. The position’s responsibilities will begin by the end of November for a 10-month term with the possibility of renewal.

The Engagement Editor will:

  • Manage and cultivate partnerships to increase visibility for Immerse, including outreach with scholars, technologists, practitioners, artists, and industry leaders, and cross-promotion with organizations with aligned missions.
  • Strategize and implement an engagement strategy and social media identity for Immerse.
  • Work with the editors on all integrated outreach, marketing and publicity efforts, including email marketing and press outreach.
  • Create content for Immerse’s web channels (video and graphics), including writing copy and creating graphics (Adobe InDesgn, Photoshop, and/or Canva), and posting daily, in collaboration with and to supplement the work of our Associate Producer and Producer.
  • Monitor and maintain press coverage and newsletter lists, and generate and implement ideas for expanding the press list and outreach to deepen Immerse’s commitment to introducing audiences to innovative non-fiction emerging media.
  • Create improvement benchmarks in consultation with editorial staff.
  • Analyze web traffic, newsletter and social media engagement, and digital advertising reports to help inform new strategies and campaigns.
  • Conduct all activities and communications with sensitivity to accessibility and non-profit magazine practices.

To apply, please send your CV and a brief email about your qualifications and vision for engaging more readers with Immerse to editor@immerse.news with the subject line “Engagement Editor.” Applications will be accepted until Friday, November 13, 2020, at 5pm ET.
